Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the expert analysis on the need to slow infection rates and in line with government’s declaration of the state of national disaster: we at the Tshisimani Centre for Activist Education have taken the decision to SUSPEND the hosting of all shows, events, programmes, workshops and all other activities which were booked with us at Bertha House by external partners.
In the context where working class communities most often use public transport to attend events, and where the closed gathering of people within Bertha House itself puts people at risk, a socially responsible approach to popular education in light of coronavirus means limiting the gathering of people where possible. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and hope that our partners will understand and accept our decision.
Further, from 17 March to 13 April 2020 Tshisimani will not proceed with planned activist education workshops, meetings, film screenings, camps and reading groups as we cannot control for the safety of participants. Tshisimani staff will be exploring different means of making our offerings accessible without the need to meet physically. Throughout this period we continue monitor the situation, update our partners as the situation unfolds and evolve our offerings as contexts change.
Importantly, Tshisimani is also initiating broader progressive mobilisation in Cape Town to open space for mass mobilisation and action in response to the pandemic. A separate announcement will be sent out in this regard. We invite our partners to join us in this effort.
