COSATU has boldly proposed that the Public Investment Commission (PIC) must invest in ending load-shedding. The PIC is Africa’s largest asset manager and amongst the top ten asset managers in the world. Some commentators reject COSATU’s proposal in favour of ESKOM’s privatisation and a bigger role for Independent Power Producers in renewable energy. Others believe that  COSATU is gambling with workers’ pension savings. Against ESKOM’s privatisation, NUMSA has called for the consolidation of ESKOM as a public entity and has long campaigned for socially owned renewable energy.

This seminar will consider both COSATU and NUMSA proposals on the PIC investing at ESKOM, on the restructuring of ESKOM and on socially owned renewable energy. The AIDC, which has produced research affirming the PIC proposal and is campaigning for energy democracy, will be a respondent.
